3/15/10

Rest of the Picks

National League East
1.  Philadephia Phillies
2.  Atlanta Braves (wild card)
3.  Florida Marlins
4.  New York Mets
5.  Washington Nationals

I'm not sure I've seen or read anything to suggest that anyone can compete with a healthy Philadephia, especially with Cy Holladay.  Atlanta is much closer than before; if Heyward is rookie of the year, all bets are off.  Pitching depth gets them to October.  Pesky Florida finishes third, Bay isn't a savior, and Washington is still Washington for a couple more years at least.

National League West
1.  San Francisco Giants
2.  Colorado Rockies
3.  Los Angeles Dodgers
4.  Arizona Diamondbacks
5.  San Diego Padres

I'm surprising myself and picking SF to win the division, mostly because they have one of the best rotations in baseball.  Not sure where the hitting is, maybe Posey.  Not sure it matters.  The Rox fall just short, as Jim Tracy proves he's not the next great manager.  The Dodgers are thin all around, without the resources to change anything.  Without a healthy Webb, the snakes are dead.  The Padres play in pretty San Diego.

American League East
1.  New York Yankees
2.  Boston Red Sox (wild card)
3.  Tampa Bay Rays
4.  Baltimore Orioles
5.  Toronto Blue Jays

The Bronx machine will continue their domination (real shocker, I know) all the way into November.  While admittedly more intriguing, and probably a better team this year, the Pesky Underdog Red Sox will fall just short once again.  Then they'll flame out to the Yankees in October.  Huh, this story sounds familiar.  Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Toronto fall right into place in the standings.

American League Central
1.  Chicago White Sox
2.  Detroit Tigers
3.  Minnesota Twins
4.  Kansas City Royals
5.  Cleveland Indians

Ozzie Guillen can't screw this hand he's been dealt, can he?  A full season of Peavy and Buehrle should be enough to win this division.  Detroit and Minnesota are nearly equals, and should be a half dozen games shy of the wild card, at best.  Kansas City finshes fourth primarily on Greinke's Cy arm, but also because Cleveland is really awful.

American League West
1.  Texas Rangers
2.  Seattle Mariners
3.  Los Angeles Angels
4.  Oakland Athletics
Texas is my flyer, look like a genius or a fool pick.  Seattle is of course the consensus favorite with a great offseason,  but Ian Snell is their third starter, so it better rain a lot in Seattle this year.  Eventually the Angels have to regress, and by doing nothing to replace Figgins and Lackey, this is the year.  Oakland is building an interesting core, like always.
