Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Letters addressed to R. H. Horne, 1839:
‘The luck of the third adventure’ is proverbial.
This is the earliest finding of the phrase I could find. The last version is my watching Charlie Morton's start today. The first time I cheered for him on this blog was an ugly day in Wrigley last summer. The second time I posted excitement for a start of was my twittering of last week's Brewer Debacle. Now, here I go again. Maybe I should be searching "glutton for punishment" instead?
